Oil and Gas

The first exploration for oil in the area was financed in 1886 by a group of Great Bend speculators. The well produced salt water.

But in 1917, Dr. Walter Amend and the locally organized Cheyenne Oil and Gas Company began to drill Well No.1 Sooy. Six years later they completed the producing well. This signalled the beginning of a new industry of the entire Central Kansas area.

By 1930, it was conservatively estimated that the county received more than $2,000,000 annually from this industry. The Kansas Oil and Gas Hall of Fame and Museum, 5944 W 10th Street, show the amazing story of oil and gas production, geology and many products made from oil.
